Common Cold

“A person often catches a cold when a mother-in-law comes to visit. Patients mentioned mothers-in-law so often that we came to consider them a common cause of disease in the United States.” Thats the humorous picture of common cold . I would like to say that its not only confined to United States but in almost every where in world its common ! I hope mine is not reading it !

Indeed,  but when it comes to kids and common cold it becomes a serious issue. Commom Cold / Acute Coryza an inflammation of upper respiratory tract caused by infection of common viruses. It lasts for 3 to 10 days. Dear moms handle it in peace first three days are miserable. One can suffer from common old several types in a year.

 

The initial signs of a cold are  feeling soreness of throat and congestion of nasal passages. Disease generally begins in the nose and the throat, it affects all parts of the body.

 

Symptoms of common cold are running nose, sneezing, rise in temperature, headache , sore throat, chill, aches and pains in the body , and loss of apetite.

 

Other factor influencing common cold are low vitality, exposure to cold, lack of sleep, mental depression,  dust .

 

Home remedies that work are Garlic Soup as it reduces the severity of the cold sould be taken once daily. The soup can be prepared by boiling 3-4 cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water. Garlic has antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. Oil contained in this vegetable helps to open up the respiratory passages. 5 drops of garlic oil combined with a tsp. of onion juice, and diluted in a cup of water should be drunk 2-3 times a day.

 

Can take about ginger cut into small pieces and boiled in a cup of water. It should be strained and half a teaspoon of sugar added to it. This should be drunk when hot. Ginger tea, prepared by adding a few pieces of ginger into boiled water before adding the tea leaves. Its another remedy for colds  and for fevers resulting from cold.

 

Tumeric powder mixed with warm milk and taken twice daily is useful. Milk should be poured in it and boiled over a slow. This mixture should then be drunk by the patient.

 

When fever is present the paitent should abstain from all solid foods and only drink fruit and vegetable juices, diluted with water. The avoids are meat, eggs, cheese and starchy foods.

 

Other Measures a mild sunbath, fresh air and deep breathing , brisk walks, sound sleep .

Healthy Baby Food Options

This transition  from liquids to solids is another interesting phase accompanied with delight and concern . Its indeed a responsibility to nurture another life. One of my friend is undergoing the same . This is dedicated to little Harry !

Breakfast options !

1 cup cereals - serve rice cereal, cooked mashed dals check consistency don`t be harsh on little tummy !

1   cup fruits - Mashed ripe banana is really kiddies favourite. For a change go for Apple Stew . Or mashed papaya in combo of sapotaa.

Snack

 Small quantities of Juices of orange, grapes, pomeranate can be given . But balance it out such a way that baby doesnt get habitual to sweet stuff. Its the time when they develop habits. Its in ours hands totally.

Cooked and mashed veggies (peas, carrots, bottle gourd).

Lunch options

1   cup yoghurt or yellow vegetables .

1   cup Mashed dal and rice.

1   cup Vegetable soup.

 1   cup Roasted Wheat porridge.

Young Asthamatics !

The disease is caused by variety of factors weather conditions, food, drugs, perfumes, dust most common. Some food stuff that causes allergic reactions wheat, egg, milk, chocolates, psychological factors like emotional insecurity, intense need of parental love and protection. Heredity factor could be  another reason.

Transition from coke therapy to Juice Therapy

 We are blessed with better options why not utilize it to best. This was a lesson i was given yetserday so thought of sharing. I bought a big pack of sprite bottles home was screwed such a way as if i have brought a non veg. in a strict jain house ! I felt bad because i like the drink because it is not black ! It does add useless calories to yourself of which not sure  will get burned. Another point arises seeing  me my little princess will learn that too ! Will she not learn when will be exposed to outer world ? Biggies have to keep upperhand whatever !

So my day started with a glass of fresh juice ! Well i made them happy ! I know they are concerned about me but its my age . I cant be careless later anyways …

Coming to the point its simply a part of diet not a wholesome and balanced diet in itself. It can even cause allergic reactions to few individuals. Be careful ! One should know onself well !

For vegetable and fruit juice age is no bar . It is advisable that fruit slightly lukewarm can be given to infants in day time. Forced feeding is never recommended.

For growing children from 5 to 12 years a child requires plenty of repeated serving of essential food nutrients. Juice of orange, grapes, minced banana ,  pomeranate can be given.

Tonsilitis - Tata bye bye

Some slow yet effective  remedies granny has in her kitty ! Kho kho..mmh..mmh..  clearing her throat! :D:D  These can be carried out for the soothing effect to continue .

Jason suffered with tonsilitis effects of which are painful and horrible . Tonsilitis are quick in happening but slow in going but can be put on hold by being  kind in choosing food items which soothe the the throat and not erupt it.

 A gargle made from fenugreek seens is very effective. To make such a gargle 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seens to be allowed to simmer for 1/2 hr. in a litre of water and then set aside to cool. The entire qty. can be used  a soothing gargle for the day.

For betterment a glass of milk mixed with a pinch of tumeric powder and pepper powder taken for 3 nights will help.

Vegetable juices of carrot, beet, cucumber consumed individually or in combination is helpful.

It actually leads to fasting  to that serious symtoms should subside nothing but orange juice and water shall be taken. As the acute symtoms are over gradually embark on balanced diet grains, vegetables, fruits. Spices and condiments are BIG AVOIDS.

Sour substances like curds, buttermilk, fried foods should also be avoided.

Gastritis - go go

Hannah had gastritis problems on 4th of july in cape town after eating beef at Robben Island Museum.

An inflamed stomach lining originates when we go a bit carefree about a little pouch that God has given for which the world  actually operates . Over filling and total ignorance towards it yields unhealthy results. So medication is required if severity is observed !

Jaundice

A liver disorder . I recognise it as a yellow phobia !

The remedies suggested for jaundice are :

A glass of Tomato fresh juice mixed with a pinch of salt and pepper consumes early in the morning is benefecial .

Snake gourd leaves : prepared by mixing 15 gms. of dry leaves in 250 ml of boiling water .

Pigeon Pea leaves a leguminous plant used for dals . Juice from these leaves 60 ml daily will produce remarkable improvement.

A mixture of almonds, dried dates and cardamoms is useful solution. 8 kernerls soaked overnight in water remove outer coeating of almond(the brown layer) plus the 2 dried dates of which inner seeds should be removed along with 5 cardamoms rubbed to fine paste with 50 gms. of sugar and butter mixed in it .

Dietery requirements will go about like by employing a full fruit diet for 3-4 days. A simple carbohydrate diet is recommended BIG AVOID to fats, oils, tumeric powder in jaundice.

Gastritis …

reminds me of a joke my niece  shooted oh its the “burp sound from  the bottom” ;) when she was 2+.Well ofcourse a joke for us but the quotation was very much dipped in innocence wrapped with child observation  as to how they relate things.

To start with The causes and symptoms

Loss of apetite, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness. Pain & discomfort in stomach, coated tongue, foulbreath, bas taste, increased flow of saliva, scanty urination, uneasiness, mental depression.

Other reasons are dietetic factors, overeating, improperly cooked food, intake of strong tea is excessive, lot of use of condiments if its a practice, other factors are worry, anxiety, certain drugs, acids .

Potato juice half cup of juice . 2-3 times daily half an hour before meals will curb the inflammation of the stomach.

Coconut water is an excellent remedy contained with required vitamins and minerals.

Cold milk is also a base setter in stomach works as a cooling agent .

sciencewoman facing gastric problems with her baby surely makes me think so i went through the same phase. Went through lot of sleepless nights. But my whole house use to get up with me and help me out. Her granny use to put Asafetida on the naval . The process goes ..a pinch of Asafetida on the spoon  given light heat on the burner  then taken on the cotton swab and gently paste it on the naval of the baby.Tolerable warmth do not burn it. It does wonders in few minutes.

If the baby is on mother`s feed mother should be careful in picking her food . Try not consume food that encourages gastric problem.Food items should thoughtfuly picked. As our carelessness babies have to suffer they cry with pain.

Allergies
